edwards on humility

October 6, 2008

“The humble person is like a little child, he easily receives instruction; he is jealous over himself, sensible how liable he is to go astray… …Nothing sets a person so much out of the devil’s reach as humility, and so prepares the mind for true divine light without darkness, and so clears the eye to look on things as they truly are.” – Jonathan Edwards Thoughts on the Revival

Edwards goes on to quote Psalm 25:9 –

“He guides the humble in what is right
and teaches them in his way”

I guess this fits with the fear of the Lord being the beginning of wisdom. I hadn’t thought of humility as the point of access to instruction before.

budget

October 5, 2008

I just got a new job, which means the first income I’ve had for some time.

Is it ok that I’m excited about budgeting? Must be my maths nerd past catching up with me. I am imagining beautiful excel graphs tracking months of income and expenditure… :-D

fraught with meaning

October 5, 2008

Human life, then, is fraught with meaning, with transcendence. It is not empty. It is not trivial. It is not mere mechanics. – Elisabeth Eliot

I think we all live as though what we do has meaning. What differs for the Christian, as opposed to the secular, is the conviction of transcendence. There is an importance, a gravity to our lives larger than our lives themselves- and this belief shapes our action and outlook enormously.
